LESSON 10: Prepositions begin a phrase to limit location, personal interaction or time

OBJECTIVE: The learner will understand that prepositions show the way a person, place, thing or idea is limited by a prepositional phrase. The learner will identify prepositions and learn to pause before the preposition or inflect it to help form the correct picture.

aboard about above across
against along amid among
around at after behind
below before beneath beside
between beyond by concerning
down during except in
inside into for from
like near of off
on onto outside over
past since through to
toward under up upon
until underneath with within
without

Review these prepositions with the learner. Give him a copy of this word list. Ask him to make a picture in his mind as he reads the words.

The tall girl walked     underneath the ladder.

They walked     across the yard.

Sandy went home     after the movie.

Jan went shopping     without her pocketbook.

He has two     of my pens.

Each sentence limits the picture in one of these ways: location or position, interaction, or time sequence. Have the learner read the sentence, identify the preposition, pause before it or stress it with inflection to let the listener hear that the picture is going to change. Then have the learner tell you how the prepositional phrase changes or limits the picture.

Because these prepositions tell the reader to limit the original noun (person, place, thing or idea), they change the picture. When we talk we frequently pause before these prepositions to give ourselves or the listener time to change the picture. Make sure the learner pauses or inflects his voice slightly the way we do in normal speech.

Practice the list with the learner to make sure he knows these prepositions on sight. If the learner doesn't recognize the preposition as he reads, he may forget to change the picture and not understand what he just read.

If the learner can quickly identify the prepositions and easily pause before or inflect them, go to Lesson 11.

Continue practicing by having the learner make up his own sentences using the prepositions listed at the beginning of this step. Try to use as many of the prepositions as possible.
