LESSON 7: Riding the vowel
OBJECTIVE: The learner will use voice inflection by
riding the vowel.
When you hear TV commercials or radio announcers talk they are able to
get your attention. One way they do this is using inflection. We all
inflect our voice by changing the pitch up or down as we speak.
Inflection gets people to listen to us. When we use inflection as we
read, it helps make the text interesting and we don't fall asleep.
Teach the learner to inflect his voice with awareness as he speaks and
reads. To do this you must know that we never change pitch on a
consonant, only on the vowels (a, e, i, o and u). We can say the vowel
sound flat or inflect it up or down. It is easier to inflect up than it
is to inflect down.
Click on the words below to hear how each ne should be spoken aloud:
Now read each of the above words to the learner without inflection. Then
ride the vowel up for each word. Finally, ride the vowel down. Work
with the learner until he can hear the difference as you do it. When the
learner can hear it, have him mimic you and inflect the words. Once he
can do these words, play with other words you or the learner select, or
continue with these examples:
