LESSON 4: Getting the meaning in context

OBJECTIVE: The learner will come up with the correct picture, even if he does not know the correct spelling of a word. The learner will make a picture of the rest of the sentence, then guess at the word's meaning.

Words often sound alike but the spelling or the way they're used in a sentence tells us which picture to make.

Don't ride your bike in the road.
Mike rode a pony.

Have the learner read each sentence, then ask him, "What is the meaning of the underlined word?" If he responds to road as a pathway for moving vehicles and rode as the act of sitting or riding on something, go to Lesson 5.

If the learner has difficulty determining the meaning, explain the meaning and have him find a way to remember the spelling. Try alternate sentences until the learner gets the idea:

The cowboy told his tale.  The dog wagged its tail.

The girls had to wait.  Jim's weight is 140 pounds.

Maggie said, "Hi."  The shelf is too high.
