LESSON 3: Spelling changes the picture (homonyms)

OBJECTIVE: The learner will associate the correct picture with a specific word spelling.

meat    meet maid    made oar    or

Have the learner read each word and ask him, "What is a picture that goes with this word?" Listen for responses like:

meat: animal protein, beef, chicken, etc.
meet: an action where two or more people come together
maid: a person who cleans
made: an action to build something
oar: a long pole used to row a boat
or: a conjunction, choice from two or more

If the learner can describe each word with an accurate picture, go to Lesson 4.

If the learner has difficulty, ask him, "What method can you come up with to remember the correct spelling with the correct picture?" Be creative! For example: meet -- e and e meet each other.

Continue playing with pairs until the learner understands that the correct picture is based on the spelling of the word:

pear  pair stare  stair fair  fare two  too dew  do
