LESSON 1: A word stands for a picture

OBJECTIVE: The learner will associate a picture with a word, phrase or sentence.

A word, phrase or sentence can have many different pictures.

tan fan

Have your child read these words, then ask; "What is a tan fan?"

If the learner describes a tan fan or can draw a picture of one -- an electric fan that is tan, a hand fan that is tan, a sports fan that is tan, etc. -- go to Lesson 2.

If the learner hesitates, repeats, "It's a tan fan," or has any other difficulty answering, ask him, "What would you bring me if I asked you to go to the closet and bring me a tan fan?" At this point the learner will usually associate the object with its word symbol.

Continue with similar phrases until the learner connects that words stand for a picture:

ten fans, ten men, tan bag, big bat
